Coastal Hiking in Mar del Plata from the Port

The meeting point is at 8:00am at the Centro Comercial del Puerto, located on Virgen de la Lágrima street N° 31, next to the docks of Mar del Plata.

The Centro Comercial del Puerto is a food and dining area with its own history within the port neighborhood, which grew alongside the city’s fishing activity and tourism. Since its origins, the port of Mar del Plata has been a hub for supplies, trade, and popular cuisine.

The first stop is the Port Nature Reserve of Mar del Plata, which is home to more than 150 bird species, some of them migratory, as well as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and a wide variety of native and exotic flora. It is also possible to observe the notable sea lion colony that inhabits the area.

From the port reserve, the route continues toward the Punta Mogotes lagoons. The guide explains how the coastal ecosystem extends through this area and how human activity has transformed these landscapes over time.

During the walk through the Punta Mogotes area, a stop is made for a picnic, which includes a sandwich, a piece of fruit, and a bottle of mineral water.

The last stop takes place at the Museo del Hombre del Puerto, also known as the Ciocchini Museum.

The Ciocchini Museum covers three areas of study: anthropological, sociological, and historical. It preserves documents and photographs of the port’s construction, the first settler families, the arrival of fishermen, and the Italian communities with their traditions.

The museum displays the original furniture from the offices of the port’s construction company, the Société Nationale de Travaux Publics, of French origin, active during the early decades of the 20th century.

The activity has a total duration of 4 hours, ending at the same initial meeting point. The tour is conducted with a Spanish-speaking guide and has a low difficulty level.
