After two and a half years since the closure of the Devil’s Throat in November 2023 due to damage to the walkways caused by a significant rise in water levels, the park announced again on July 31, 2026, that the Devil’s Throat circuit will remain closed indefinitely until the weather phenomenon known as “El Niño” comes to an end.
Due to this phenomenon, a significant increase in the Iguazú River’s water levels is expected, potentially affecting the stability of the walkways and the safety of all visitors.
What is the current status of the Devil’s Throat?
On July 31, an official statement announced that the circuit would remain closed indefinitely. This was the official statement from Iguazú Argentina:

IMPORTANT NOTICE: DEVIL’S THROAT CIRCUIT CLOSURE
Dear agencies and partners of the Iguazú Falls destination:
We would like to inform you that, starting Monday, August 3, the Devil’s Throat Circuit will remain closed indefinitely.
The decision was announced this Thursday, July 30, following meetings between authorities and technical experts from Iguazú National Park and the concessionaire Iguazú Argentina S.A., due to weather forecasts for northern Argentina, southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, which indicate a significant increase in rainfall as a result of the “El Niño” (ENSO) phenomenon.
The forecast anticipates extraordinary rises in the Iguazú River over the coming months, and significant excess water is expected during September and October, which could put the circuit’s structures at risk.
In response to this situation, Iguazú Argentina S.A. will implement a specific protocol starting Monday, August 3, which will last approximately 40 days and will involve removing the circuit’s flooring and railings, with the aim of preserving the components for their subsequent reinstallation.
We invite you to actively support the promotion of the destination, reinforcing the message that Iguazú National Park remains open, with its other attractions available to visitors: the “Yvyrá Retá” Visitor Center, Yaguareté Territory, Jungle Ecological Train, Lower Circuit, Upper Circuit, Green Trail, Macuco Trail, the Old Hotel Cataratas Historical Exhibition, souvenir shops, and dining establishments.

We continue to work with our usual commitment to protecting the safety of visitors and staff, as well as respecting the nature and biodiversity that characterize the Falls, a Natural World Heritage Site.
When is the Devil’s Throat expected to reopen?
There is no official confirmation regarding the reopening of the Devil’s Throat, but it is expected to remain closed for at least 40 days (ideally, it would reopen in mid-September). However, the statement indicates that another rise in water levels is expected in October, so it is not recommended to plan any trips until there is official confirmation of the reopening.
The official statement also indicates that the flooring and railings of the circuit will be removed and preserved for subsequent reinstallation.
What about the other circuits in the Argentine park?
The Lower Circuit, Upper Circuit, and Macuco Trail remain open as usual, as they are not built over any waterways. The park can still be visited as usual, with the only exception being that the Devil’s Throat circuit is currently unavailable.
